Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood gained a new Secretary of State office on Thursday.
Located at 580 E. Warren Ave., Detroiters will have access to typical offerings like license and registration services, as well as a self-service station that can print tabs, registrations and temporary licenses and IDs 24/7.
“This new office increases our ability to provide in-person service in Detroit, where past office closures forced city residents to wait in line for hours on end,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in the announcement. “Now visitors at all our offices across the state are in and out in an average of 20 minutes or less.”
The new office, located near hospitals and Wayne State University, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays except Wednesdays, when the hours shift to 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Ensuring that Detroiters have easy access to Secretary of State services is very important,” said state Sen. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, whose district surrounds the new location. “My office hears regularly from our residents about wanting closer connection to government.”
The new Midtown Detroit location, like all Secretary of State offices, offers both scheduled and walk-up service. More than 80% of visitors who walk up are served immediately, Benson’s office says, and the remaining customers can wait or schedule a return visit.
