Tax Office to offer kiosks, intended to make vehicle registrations easier

CAPE CORAL, FL—The Lee County Tax Collector will offer a more convenient way to renew vehicle registrations at three locations next month, including Cape Coral.

“We are looking at new ideas to make it better for the consumer. It keeps us from having to build additional locations. It saves us from having to hire additional people. It is cost effective for the community,” Tax Collector Larry Hart said.

The digital self-service kiosks, which will be available for use at the downtown Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres service centers in February, allows vehicle owners the opportunity to enter their information safely and securely to obtain their new registration quickly. The three locations were chosen because they are the highest volume for walk-in registrations.

Hart said they look at technology and see how it can, not only help now, but in the future as well.

“We think a lot of our customers come in because they just love to come in. These transactions are offered online. Our goal is to see some of our walk-in traffic go to our kiosk, so they can go in and out the door a lot quicker,” he said. “Kiosk service is something we want to grow on.”

The use of the kiosk is a very simple task for the customer. All they need is the registration that was mailed to them. Hart said the registration number is put into the kiosk, followed by a payment and then a printed decal.

“We want people to use it. They can use the kiosk and never have to wait in line at the express window. They can go to the kiosk and get it done and walk out the door,” he said. “It’s a convenient way to do business for our taxpayers.”

The pilot program will be initiated for 90 to 180 days, so the Lee County Tax Collector can review the results of how often the kiosk was used. The plan is also to roll it out at each one of their offices.

Hart said they want to put the kiosk out in the community at various locations by strategically meeting with various businesses throughout the community for heavy traffic areas.

“They may be at one of our local retailers,” Hart said.
